Latest Report from Dr. Lambos

Here are some notes I took related to what Dr. Lambos relayed at our meeting on Tues:

The latest FFT summary information shows

  1. definite improvement: more brain activity, compared to 18 months ago. “18 months ago, there was not that much movement up there -now there is lots of activity.” Still, the neurons are not coordinating, or working well together – hence, it is like a “traffic jam” or like “static” up there in Queena’s head. She is sending all kinds of messages, but they are going off in different directions, rather than working together to create movement. Much more brain activity than before, just not connecting. This is a big source of frustration for Queena.
  2. what is different and NEW this time is that the new procedures allow for training in three dimensions in real time  as opposed to one dimensional “training” as 18 months ago. These developments are entirely new and not available before. This is very hopeful, as these are the areas Queena needs. She needs to develop the “output” side, that is the part of her brain that sends the messages to the muscles.
  3. the plan is to work on this output side – go for the large motor coordination  first  – these are the large muscles, such as legs, arms. These are the most important, the starters. Once these are activated, the smaller ones can be tackled, and should come easier.
  4. a big goal is to help Queena get to the stage where she can speak. That will make enormous changes in her life. Like night and day. This is (hopefully) a main goal of this new strategy and brain training.
  5. Queena has made enormous strides in development in the last 4 yrs. The learning curve was so huge at first. She has made strides up that first hill. Improvements should now come more readily; that is the hope and goal.
  6. Dr. Lambos advises this brain damage could only occur through “stroke or lack of oxygen to the brain.”  He advises this would be well known to any professional, based on the pictures of her brain activity. He believes the coma she went into after the attack is what caused the significant damage to her brain.

WILLIAM A. LAMBOS, PH.D., LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST, IS THE CHIEF COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENTIST AND DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL ASSESSMENT AT CNS WELLNESS IN TAMPA. HE RECEIVED A DOCTORATE IN PSYCHOLOGY, A MASTER’S DEGREE IN REHABILITATION AND MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING, AND A POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN CLINICAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY FROM FIELDING GRADUATE UNIVERSITY. HE USES AN EEG TECHNIQUE CALLED QUANTITATIVE ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY, OR QEEG, THAT TAKES A STANDARD EEG TEST OF ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY IN THE BRAIN AND RUNS IT THROUGH A COMPUTER THAT COMPARES IT HUNDREDS OF “NORMAL” EEGS. HE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH QUEENA FOR OVER TWO YEARS NOW, AND IT HAS BEEN A VERY HELPFUL THERAPY.
